Posh Go Back To School

In the second part of Peterborough United's efforts to raise money for Sport Relief, six stars from London Road headed back to the classrooms.

They were invited to The Deepings School to take part in lessons on Wednesday afternoon after the students bid for the players via an auction.

All of the money raised in the auction will be added to total raised by the school for Sport Relief, which currently stands in excess of £5,000.

Aaron Mclean was a participant in the Food Technology class and Craig Mackail-Smith was part of the History lesson looking at how football has changed over the years.

Lee Frecklington joined Football in the Community Officer Nick Sheppard in the maths lesson where the students took part in a special game of bingo.

Gabriel Zakuani spent time with students in the Business Studies class which looked at how the football club could attract more families to London Road to watch the team in action.

Defender Ryan Bennett was part of the PSHE lesson, which focussed on fair trade, while Chris Whelpdale put his rhythm to the test by taking part in the music session. Whelpdale was required to beat the drum in a 'samba stylee' before all six players helped start the Sport Relief Mile, which involved Year 12 students.

Bennett said: 'Sport Relief is a very worthwhile cause and we, as players, are delighted to be involved. It was good fun and a learning experience for us to go into the lessons. I have to say the students and the teacher in my lesson were first class and it was great to help raise so much money.'

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Joe Lewis, who earlier in the day competed in the Sports Day with a Difference, encouraged youngsters to get involved in sport.

'I remember doing these types of events myself when I was a kid and it was weird being back on the sports field again! I have to say that Sports Relief is a great charity and it is really good to be involved. I would encourage all kids to get involved in sport, it is a great way to stay active and fit and have some fun with it,' Lewis said.
