Peterborough United opened their pre-season friendly account with a 3-0 victory over Glenn Hoddle's Academy at La Cala with George Boyd, Scott Rendell and Craig Mackail-Smith on the score-sheet.

Only Boyd, Shane Blackett and Micah Hyde completed the 90 minutes for Darren Ferguson's men as he gave the majority of his squad the chance to get some match-action under their belts.

It was Boyd who opened the scoring, drilling a low left-foot shot into the corner before Rendell added a second after excellent work from Alfie Potter down the right hand side. Mackail-Smith completed the scoring in the second half, converting from close-range after Rene Howe's deflected cross dropped kindly at the striker's feet.

Liam Hatch forced a fine save from the Academy goalkeeper while Aaron Mclean struck the outside of the post after tricking his way past the centre half. Hyde roused the biggest cheer of the evening after nut-megging one of the opposition, made special because of his loud warning which proceeded it.

Manager Darren Ferguson was pleased with his squad's run out. 'I am pleased with the lads, it was a tough match physically but they put on a good showing. We have worked on a lot of tactical stuff already this week and it was good to put a bit of it into a match situation.'

The Hoddle Academy has been set up by the former England boss to try and find a route back into the game for up to 40 players who have been released by their professional clubs in 2008. They have already received three-weeks of top class coaching at a state of the art training facility in Spain and amongst the coaching staff is Dave Beasant, John Gorman, Nigel Spackman and Graham Rix.

The Posh World spoke to Ferguson at length and also spoke to Hoddle about the Academy and his thoughts on Peterborough's chances in League One.
