Experienced centre back Chris Westwood sat out the first training session at the superb La Cala training resort as the Peterborough United squad were put through their paces in scorching temperatures.

Westwood has been struggling with a slight calf strain which he sustained during the bleep test last week and is icing the affected area as a precaution at this moment in time.

The centre-back worked alongside Strength and Conditioning Coach Scott Taylor where he completed a number of stretching exercises while the rest of the squad were put through an intense session.

Westwood, speaking exclusively to theposh.com, said: 'It is a bit of a niggle really. It is not causing me too much discomfort, so it is a precaution at the moment. I felt it a bit after the bleep test last week and it is annoying not to be playing a full part.'

In 35+ degree heat, the players trained at 6pm (5pm GMT) and after an initial warm-up the players were involved in various tactical exercises which culminated in a three-quarter pitch game.

Transfer-listed players Mark Tyler, Shwan Jalal, Daniel Blanchett, Adam Smith, Josh Low and Danny Crow did not travel, nor did Jamie Day who is injured. Striker Aaron Mclean did join the rest of the squad and played a full part in the session.
