Youngsters Slip To Cup Defeat
Peterborough United under 18s were knocked out of the PUMA Youth Alliance Cup at the quarter-final stage after losing 5-1 to a very impressive Queens Park Rangers side on Monday evening.
At an extremely foggy London Road, the visitors were always in control and played some excellent football in tricky conditions. Posh never gave up and created a few chances of their own, but the Hoops ran out deserving winners in front of a healthy crowd of just under 500.
It didn't start well for Posh as they fell 2-0 behind inside the first half with goals from the excellent Ramone Rose and Aaron Morgan, who headed home from close range after a fumble by goalkeeper Courtney Howard.
Billy Crook had earlier seen a shot pushed around the post by Reece Crowther and the hosts pulled a goal back through Jack Lyons, who rounded the goalkeeper after Hakeem Araba's shot had deflected into his path.
Lyons then saw a header deflected wide as Posh had a good spell in the game with Sam Gaughran and Evans Kouassi both going close. Araba was withdrawn at half-time due to illness and the visitors took control with Morgan making it 3-1 with a header from close-range.
He completed his hat-trick with a well taken finish at the back post before Rose completed the scoring with a crisp left-footed shot into the bottom corner. Gorman saw a goal disallowed for offside while at the other end, substitute Lewis Webb saw a right-foot shot saved by Crowther.
The game finished with heavy fog making visibility impossible, but the tie was played in good spirit and was entertaining throughout. Posh will be proud of their exploits in the competition and recognise the achievements of their visitors who deserved their passage into the semi-finals.
Posh: Howard, Reed, Andrew, Jirbandy (sub Koremteng 85min), Gaughran, Gourlay, Kouassi, Crook, Abraham (sub Hamilton 86min), Araba (sub Webb 46min), Lyons.
