Under 16's Impress In Ireland

Posted on: Fri 20 Aug 2010

The Peterborough United under 16's team recorded an impressive 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland under 16's national side on Wednesday (18th August) afternoon. Under the guidance of manager Kevin Flynn, former Posh striker David Riley and Head of Youth Dave Robertson, the lads performed admirably against their hosts.

Matt Sparrow scored the Posh goal to put the visitors ahead with a well taken finish. The young Posh side put plenty of pressure on the international team. Charlie Coulson had an earlier opportunity to score, forcing a fine stop from the Ireland goalkeeper. Charlie Butt also went close for Posh with a long range effort, which was well saved. Ireland equalised with a stunning strike before half-time.

Posh Head of Youth Dave Robertson was naturally delighted with the team's performance, 'The lads performed really well and it was a pleasing performance, it was only their second game of their pre-season and they have got lots out of this tour to Ireland. Obviously it is great for the players to get a decent result against a strong Republic of Ireland side.

'The trip will certainly bring the players closer together as a group, we are here to learn about the players and they have learnt a lot about themselves during a critical time in the their development pathway and we hope some of them can go on to bigger and better things, starting by coming in at the end of the season and earning a scholarship at the club.

'The future looks bright for the club and what we have got out of the tour has been fantastic and we have strengthened our links in Ireland as well and the clubs reputation with what we are doing with our younger players is increasing, which is really pleasing. We are really pleased for the lads because they got what they deserved out of the match,' Robertson told theposh.com.
