Tyrone Barnett earned Posh a 1-0 victory over local rivals Northampton Town in a competitive pre-season friendly.

Tyrone Barnett scored the only goal of the game as Peterborough United earned a 1-0 victory over local rivals Northampton Town at Sixfields in a competitive pre-season friendly fixture.

Liam Dickinson, once of Posh, fired wide from distance on the volley on five minutes as the game started at a fast pace.

Matt Duke produced a fine one-handed stop with his left hand to prevent Lee Tomlin from opening the scoring on 11 minutes after a glorious cross-field pass from Grant McCann.

The heavily-involved Tomlin curled a free-kick over the bar on the quarter hour mark after he had been bodychecked by Amankwaah.

Tomlin was denied by Duke after cutting inside from the left as Posh dominated.

Olejnik was well placed to deal with a powerful drive from substitute Hooper on 39 minutes as the Cobblers threatened for the first time in this first 45 minutes.

Posh felt they should have been awarded a spot-kick moments later as Sinclair appeared to be felled by Duke, but the Northampton-based official waved play on.

Substitute Dias steered a low cross wide of the near post on 52 minutes as Northampton made a brighter start to the second period. Sinclair was denied by Duke on 55 minutes after excellent work from Nthle.

Darren Ferguson's men opened the scoring on 66 minutes as trialist McCourt picked out BARNETT with a clever pass and the striker made no mistake, firing past Duke to find the breakthrough for Posh.

McCann sent a free-kick over the bar from 30-yards on 78 minutes. Hooper headed a long throw wide of the target, moments after Morris saw a long-range drive parried away by Olejnik.

At the other end, Daniel Kearns fired wide after tricking his way into the box as Posh tried to end the game with a flourish.
