Lee Tomlin goal cancelled out by second half spot-kick as Posh draw 1-1 in Shelbourne.

Peterborough United opened the pre-season friendly programme with a hard fought 1-1 draw with Shelbourne at Tolka Park on Tuesday evening.

It was Joe Newell who had the first effort of the game, but his shot was saved at the near post by Neil Burdon.

At the other end, a powerful drive from Mark Leech went inches past the post after the striker beat the offside trap. Lee Tomlin was then close to the breakthrough after a clever pass from Gordon, but his right-foot shot went a foot past the post.

Gordon saw a 20-yard right-foot curler go over the bar after a forceful run from Ntlhe on 20 minutes. The deadlock was broken on 22 minutes and it came from a set-piece as Lee TOMLIN curled home a free-kick from 25-yards past the despairing dive of Burdon.

Gordon was denied by the legs of Burdon moments later after turning his defender as Posh dominated. On the stroke of half-time, McCann nearly capped a fine individual day with a goal, but his right-foot curler went over the crossbar.

Emile Sinclair saw a shot cleared off the line moments into the second half after a clever pass from Nicky Ajose picked the striker out.

Adam Hanlon fired wide of the target on 57 minutes after beating the offside trap as Shelbourne pressed for an equaliser.

Alex Prizeman was denied by Bobby Olejnik on 70 minutes after patient link-up from the home side. Olejmik produced a fine double stop on 74 minutes to keep Posh in front, first producing a fine stop to deny substitute Brennan who had raced clean through on goal before parrying a downward header from O'Connor over the crossbar.

The home side levelled from the spot in controversial circumstances, Brennan was upended after a forceful run, but it clearly appeared to be outside the box when the contact came, but the referee pointed to the spot and captain CRONIN stepped up and sent Olejnik the wrong way from the spot.

Knight-Percival headed a corner wide of the target on 86 minutes while Olejnik pushed a Brennan shot wide of the target.
